They Made the Cake & Ate it Too
by Cheryl Hansen
It was mid February back in 1997. We only had 2 sons at the time. We wanted to do something different for Nana & Papa's anniversary. So we thought the kids could make them a cake, we video taped the whole thing, including them eating it. So this is exactly what we did. I remember this so vividly in my heart, & see it so wonderfully on video!! Ages 2 & 1. One would empty the bag of cake mix into the bowl, the other poured the liquid ingredients, they each got to crack the eggs. Which was so funny, but I honestly did not touch this cake. They did it all by themselves!! They took turns stirring it using the beaters, ( I of course helped with that for safety). Then they scooped all the batter into the pan. Oh, by the way, they even spread the vegetable shortening in the pan, & put the flour in, shook it. What a blast. All caught on video!!! We waited by them playing basketball outside with their little nets. It was warmer that year for a little bit. So here they were taking a break from the cooking in the kitchen. When it came time to frost it, they did that with a spoon. To this day, I was totally amazed that most of it went on the cake, not in their mouths. Which was a shock!! They also took the decorations, & decorated it all in one blob. What a marvelous cake. Made by a 2 & 1 year old. They then got to eat it, after they tried their hardest to say Happy Anniversary to Nana & Papa. The I love you's came thru loud & clear. & so did the tears of joy, when we got the phone call from my parents after they opened & viewed their special gift. We only get to see them once a year because of the distance. So this was truly a gift that was viewed over & over. I would recommend this to anyone. All it took was tying my hands behind my back when they were cracking the eggs. ( ha ha) I wanted to help so much, but wanted to be able to say they did it. & THEY DID. For some reason they really remember this, & want to do it again. So now the tradition in our family is THEY make the cake for each other on their birthdays. It is such a treat!!!
