A Modern World:
A Look at Nemedian Civilization

There has never been a more intriguing time to live in Nemedia. The world is in the midst of an industrial and mystic revolution. Cutting-edge mystech, a synthesis of technology and magic, is leading the way for a new age in Nemedia. One of the most promising developments is that of mystic batteries. The batteries will be capable of storing mystical energy for long periods of time to power mystech-enhanced devices. At this point battery use is limited due to massive energy drain. However, many mystechnologists claim that a battery capable of one hour of constant use will be developed within ten years.

The development of batteries already promises to increase development in such mystechnologies as automated transportation systems, magic storage services, and communications.

The primary system for communication is the crystal-based scryphone. Using enhanced crystal, one can speak with another mortal being from any point in Nemedia. Scryphones are powered by ambient magic, are typically small, and can be carried with you at all times. The only drawback is that in order for communication between two scryphones to occur, they must first have physical contact in order to transmit their individual frequency-code.

In other words, you would touch your scryphone to another's scryphone, and from that point on you'll be able to contact that person. You then input by voice a name to go with the frequency code, and you're set. When you want to call that person, you hold the scryphone in your hand, and say the name. The other person's crystal will flash and vibrate to indicate they are receiving a call.  They can ignore it, or pick it up and say "answer."

Your voice is transmitted telepathically to the listener's brain through physical contact with their crystal, and vice-versa. The crystal can pick up most near-by noise, so be sure to hold it within a foot of your mouth when speaking to minimize disruptive noises. And remember: Do NOT use the scry in public places such as theaters and while on horseback. Not only is it a social no-no, but, in the case of horse riding and scrying, it can be dangerous.

Nemedia has also led the way in identification systems. Developed 57 years ago, the 3C (Charged Crystal Configuration) Rod ID system has become the default standard for personal ID on Nemedia. These crystal rods have a length of three inches, and a diameter of one-half inch. The crystals are tinted according to the nation of origin. Elara, for instance, uses yellow-tinted crystal rods while Greylan uses a dark-green-tinted crystal. Visitors to Nemedia such as yourself will be issued gray-tinted crystal IDs.
