H ERA LIVE SONGS TRACK BY TRACKThis is an attempt to trace the live history of every Hogarth era track from the last 10 years. I think it's extremely unlikely that this is going to be 100% correct straight away, so if you do notice any errors or omissions, please do email the editor, so he can update the list. Entries will obviously also be updated after each new tour. Acronyms,

Seasons End Tour (107 shows - Oct 1989 - Jul 1990 - Europe, UK, N & S America)Sticking to virtually the same identical set throughout one of their longest and most extensive tours, Marillion introduced Freaks quite early on to a Dutch audience, as well as featuring it throughout the summer of 1990. Garden Party and Sugar Mice both came later, during the tour of North America in the summer of 1990. As the tour wore on, several songs from the new album would be dropped from nigh to night to protect H's voice. Sample Set

Winter 1990 Tour (8 Shows Dec 1990 - UK)A short UK tour, taking out 4 of the songs they had premiered at the Moles Club in Bath, whilst also introducing the UK to the new version of Garden Party. Sample Set

Holidays In Eden Tour1st European leg (36 shows - Sep-Nov 1991)The first tour to contain setlist rotation to any real extent, mainly consisting of substitution especially in the encore. Whilst playing all of the new album, the band balanced this with the introduction of Garden Party early on and a section taken from side two of Misplaced Childhood. The acoustic section (usually Holloway Girl, A Collection and Waiting to Happen) initially also featured Sugar Mice. Sample Set

2nd European Leg ( 12 shows - Dec 1991)The setlist did not alter radically for this tour, save for a number of songs shifting position, Dry Land and the acoustic section being dropped, and the reintroduction of the 'Clutching' trilogy. Quite a lot of the set restructuring was carried onto the remainder of the tour, significantly the sliding forward of more recent songs, and the sliding back of Fish-era tracks. Sample Set

N American Leg (26 shows - March - April 1992)The first American tour of 92 was in support of the 'Singles Collection', and featured a set that combined the two approaches of the European leg. The use of the Space as the set closer, was the first time this had been done since the SE tour. Sample Set

SIX of One Tour (20 shows - Sept - Oct 1992 Europe, N & S America)The 10th Anniversary shows feature some rare performances, including the only performances of I Will Walk On Water and The Release during the European shows, as well as some odd segues, most notably an Easter into Incommunicado puzzler. Kayleigh right through to Slainte Mhath were by now being played in one long medley. The US dates are really just a slightly amended version of the set they had earlier in the tour, with the notable additions of Script and Sympathy. Sample Set

Brave Tour (73 Shows - Feb-Sep 1994 - Europe, Japan, Mexico)Funnily enough the main set was exactly the same everywhere, with the encores varying, but the first usually being the Cover My Eyes/Slainte Mhath /Uninvited Guest segue. The last date of the tour in Mexico City features a 5 song set at the beginning, followed by Brave in it's entirety, and then 2 encores. This show (available on video) features almost all the songs listed below. Sample Set

Afraid Of Sunlight TourNorth American Leg (16 shows Aug 1995)Having missed out the USA and Canada completely on the 1994 tour after the album bombed there, the band opened up their tour to support AOS in Washington, where they played Out of this World for the only time on the tour. As North America had not had a tour for 'Brave', the set contains a good deal more from that album than the European leg. A cover of Pink Floyd's 'Arnold Layne' also appeared occasionally as an encore - this track had first been performed at a Web UK show in London to launch the album. Also worth noting is that this is the tour where Marillion first played the Kayleigh/Lavender/Afraid of Sunlight sequence, playing Blue Angel for the first time since the split. The last show of the tour took place in Poughkeepsie and is notable for lasting almost three hours, as the band continued to play encore after encore! Sample Set

European Leg (21 shows Sept-Oct 1995)Essentially the same set as above for the most part with the most notable addition being the previously unperformed White Russian, and the introduction of Splintering Heart as first encore. The set for this tour was rock solid throughout with the only deviations coming in Glasgow (Uninvited Guest dropped for Bell in the Sea/YGTHYLA due to technical problems) and Bielefeld (where they played an impromptu version of I Saw Her Standing There). Made Again Tour (4 Shows April 1996)An ultra short tour to promote the live album with one gig in each of the four strongest Marillion territories. The fanbase friendly setlist included several rarely performed tracks (including 4 more performances of Out of this World and the first performance of the full electric Bell in the Sea) and the last performances of Fish-era tracks in the UK for three and a half years. Seasons End unexpectedly but effectively opened the shows, a tactic that was to be extensively reused throughout the next tour. The extra tracks were all included in the set in Vrendenburg in the Netherlands, where there was no curfew on the venue. This set contained the last to date performances of King Of Sunset Town, The Party, Out Of This World, Market Square Heroes, Bridge and Living With The Big Lie. Sample Set

This Strange Engine TourUK/Euro 1st Leg (22 shows April-may 1997)Marillion famously polled the fans before this tour, but neglected to play their top choice Cinderella Search. Instead, The Bell in the Sea was retained from the mini tour and Holloway Girl was brought back from the dead. For the first time ever, the entire setlist for the UK leg was drawn from post 1988 recordings. By the end of this tour, This Strange Engine (after some shuffling about) had established itself as the 1st encore, and other initially rotated tracks such as Lap of Luxury and Hard as Love had carved a position in the backbone of the set. S American leg (11 shows June 1997)Marillion's most extensive tour of South America ever saw them play a fairly standard mix of old and new - effectively their strongest set to tackle this mostly virgin territory. Garden Party and Incommunicado switched position from night to night. Hope for the Future has not been played since this tour. Sample Set

N American leg (25 Shows - Aug-Sept 1997)The famous Tour Fund tour started on a downer with complaints that the setlists of the early shows were too standard and traditional (they consisted of much the same as the band had played in South America). By the time the tour crossed over to the east coast, Marillion had rehearsed many more songs and the tour developed with a slightly different set every night, something the band have been reluctant to do before and since. Surprises included versions of White Russian, Sympathy and Waiting to Happen, the latter missing in action since 1992. A variety of tracks served as the opener, from Seasons End, to Man of 1000 Faces, Beautiful and - most unusually - Estonia for a couple of shows. The highlight of the tour came in Montreal on the day of Princess Diana's funeral where the band played Abraham, Martin and John for the first time and went on to play for nearly three hours with several encores. European 2nd leg (18 Shows - Oct 1997)The band carried the cavalier spirit of the US tour back to Europe with them for a set of French and German shows, and a tour climax in Amsterdam. The set was slightly more settled now, with One Fine Day restored, and a few covers tossed in here and there. this leg of the tour is most notable as being the one where the little snippets of songs began to surface in This Strange Engine - examples on this tour include The Police's Spirits In A Material World and Roxanne, Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight, and Bob Marley's Could You Be Love and One Love. The earliest example of this we could find was in Nice on the 20th, but we can't be sure it didn't start before that. Sample Set

The Walls Restaurant, Oswestry Acoustic Shows (2 shows - June 1998)Whilst mixing Radiation in Oswestry, the band decided to play a quiet one off set in a local restaurant in exchange for food. By the time the Internet had finished with it, it was two shows, sold out, with a lot more pressure than initially intended. Highlights of the nights include the first ever performance of Beyond You, the first official play of Afraid of Sunrise (it had previously been played in a more ramshackle form in soundcheck on the TSE tour of North America), and a bevy of covers. New tracks premiered were the acoustic Answering Machine and Now She'll Never Know, although Under the Sun was also tacked on to the end of the second night in full electric form. Set for June 25, 1998

Radiation Tour (20 shows - Aug -Dec 1998 - Europe only)After what had turned out to be a fairly long tour in 1997, we were all shocked when Marillion slashed back the amount of shows they were playing in 1998, although better attendances would seem to have vindicated this decision. The set this time round was a real radical departure - nothing at all from before 1991 until the tail end of the tour, rearranged versions of several songs (Splintering Heart, CSB, Gazpacho), the unusual 'Big Beat' version of Memory of Water, and all of Radiation, save the one time only Born to Run, played in Wolverhampton in place of TSE. Even Man of 1000 Faces had its best section excised. This tour was fairly heavily criticised at the time, and attracted a lot of dissension from the crowd, and in retrospect it does appear to be quite a poorly balanced set of songs. A lot of the extra songs listed were actually played at shows around Europe before the album's release to promote the new songs to the fanclubs. Sample Set

Oxford 1999 (4 shows - Jul 1999)A four night stand in the famous University town during the nicest week of weather all year, proved to be a total triumph. The band were recorded for the current Racket release, as well as being videod for release in 2000. The set promised previews of the band's new album, but in the end only 2 songs were played, although the shows also included the first non-restaurant performances of Beyond You, as well as seeing the first UK performances of Fish era tracks in some time, and the resurrection of Berlin for the first time since 1996. Marillion.com Tour (17 shows - Nov/Dec 1999 - Europe only)With a cracking new album to promote, full of songs suited to live performances, Marillion embarked on an even shorter tour (although more shows are planned this year). After flirting with Brave, they eventually settled for Go! as the set opener, and the rest of the set soon fell into place during the UK tour. After Interior Lulu was controversially left out of the set in London, it made only one or two other appearances, and a fair bit of rotation began to take place, with Afraid of Sunrise making it's tour debut and Garden Party sometimes replacing Slainte as the final song.
