Star Trek - The Next Generation - Season 1

001
Encounter at Farpoint

The pilot of all "New Trek", this is a fairly imaginative story. If it hadn't been for John de Lancie's fantastic Q character the show would be mediocre. In retrospect the characters are somewhat different from what they will become. Most notably Picard, Worf and Counselor Troi. Picard is far from his calm, determined, diplomatic self. The main plot about Farpoint Station is a little dull for a Pilot. But still thouroughly enjoyable.

002
The Naked Now

I know it's only the second episode but the cast seem to be stumbling around in the dark trying to find thier characters. This only makes it more hillarious. Even if Wil Weaton's acting is so bad it is almost not funny. The scene with Picard and Crusher in the ready room is classic. And it has Data's famous "fully functional" line.

003
Code of Honor

What is this Ligon II place I wonder? A vacation colony for rejected actors? The acting is...well...bad. The story is...well...boring. And the showdown between Yar and Yareena is humorous rather than intense.

004
The Last Outpost

Introducing the Ferengi. These original Ferengi are very different (more alien) from the later versions in DS9, but still fun. The story is very slow and not very original. But the special effects very good and there is some nice comedy with Data (Chinese finger puzzle). Average season 1 antics.

005
Where No One has Gone Before

The best episode of the season. The acting may be bad but the story is very interesting and the effects are relatively good. Picard stepping out of a Turbolift into open space is startling. The Traveller is decidedly enigmatic and cool. Wesley is actually very good in this show. We hear about his extraordinary powers for the first time here.

006
Lonely Among Us

Data's Sherlock Holmes impersonation is a season highlight. But the Anticans and the Selay are the most ridiculous aliens ever to haunt the Star Trek universe, they would look more at home in the cantina scene in Star Wars. Picard floating around in a cloud of energy is also highly suspect.

007
Justice

This Rubicon 3 place isn't a half bad, with everyone running around in skimpy underwear and all. The Edo God is nicely done and apparently they used most of their budget on that ship, because the rest of the show is substandard.. except for the underwear of course. And it gives a patronizing look on religion.

008
The Battle

A first look into Picard's mind in another Ferengi episode. The ghostly scenes on the Stargazer work out well and the ending is pretty tense. We see the legendary Picard Manouver (the tactic, not the shirt pulling).

009
Hide and Q

Q comes back to liven things up. All in all it is a silly story that tries to take itself seriously. Again if any other actor had played Q this show would have been rubbish. Q's planet looks like it was put together in a matter of minutes out of cardboard and duct tape, but thats not the point.. it is fun.

011
The Big Goodbye

The first of countless Holodeck themed episodes. Well it was sort of interesting at the time, but the "Holodeck malfunction show" has been done much better since in the other series. The mobsters are shallow and irritating.

013
Angel One

An awful episode, one of the worst ever. The Planet of the Amazons concept is an old and basicly a crap concept. Riker is get's it on, which is about the only thing to laugh at in this load of bollocks.

014
11001001

Not bad. The Bynars are a good idea but vastly annoying, they could have been cool if they didn't have to speak like that. That Commander Riker could fall for that Minuet tramp is beyond me. The ending is a bit disappointing.

015
Too Short a Season

An ambitious story but badly executed. Admiral Jameson's character is not only suffering from Iverson's disease but also a bad case of crap acting (and crap make-up job). You may have missed the highlight of the show, look closely at Picard's face as he walks into the turbolift on his way to greet Jameson, just what did he see in there?

016
When the Bough Breaks

The Aldeans have some awesome technology (planetary cloaking?!) and that presents a certain coolness factor to this otherwise fairly dull episode. Wil Weaton gets a lot of sceentime, a good thing if you happen to like him.

017
Home Soil

This show reminds me a great deal of the Original Series, can't put my finger on it. Director Mandel is well played and the story isn't half bad. Good, but it won't excatly knock your socks off.

020
The Arsenal of Freedom

A fairly action packed episode. Has both a space battle (with saucer seperation!) and some ground phaser dueling. Picard and Beverly Crusher get stuck together in a dark place, but I doesn't really get too interesting at any point. Seeing LaForge in command of the Enterprise is a definete plus.

021
Symbiosis

It's a good thing Star Trek preaches about relevant issues like drugs, but it's another when the show itself is about as dull as staring into a blank screen for 45 minutes. There is nothing wrong with this except a severe lack of plot and good dialogue.

022
Skin of Evil

A shame Tasha Yar had to die, it would have been fun to see what her character would be like after 7 seasons. I really enjoyed this episode even if the special effects crew were on vacation at the time they shot it. Armus is cool, but looks laughably cheap. Tasha Yar dying and Riker being swallowed by evil black goo is quite gruesome for a TNG show.

023
We'll Always Have Paris

This one falls into the "temporal anomaly show" category, but it's a good one. Has one excellent special efx scene, when Data seals the time-breach. Has more background information on Picard, And the guest actors Mr. and Mrs. Mannheim are very good.

024
Conspiracy

This conspiracy thing is a good idea but it could have been done a lot better in the later seasons. The fight with Quinn is oddly amusing, as is the explosion of Commander Remmick. You can still hear me giggeling at the nail-bitingly scary alien parasites from time to time. And WHY were they eating maggots?
