The Parable of the Snake

Cobra was brought up in the remote eastern deserts of the Realm of Camel Hygiene.  The Order of the Cobra had long been servants of the Royal Family since the days of the early Kings.  This race of ninja snakes was renowned for producing the best Ninja Scope Knights throughout the land.  Their rich tradition steeped high in history meant the Scope Snakes were a proud tribe who were loyal to the death to their king, the forces of truth, and their proud family name.

Over time through constant wars between the early Scope Knights and the disciples of darkness, the Order of the Cobra was all but wiped out.  What was left of this noble race returned to the desert where they waited for the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy.

"From the East shall rise a warrior.  He shall take his place amongst the eight of destiny, his wisdom shall guide them, his skill shall strengthen them.  He will become a beacon that all those who believe in the truth shall follow."

(Book of Dimentia, Chapter 7, Verses 21-22)

Thousands of years later the nomad Cobra's became aware that one of their young was blessed with remarkable gifts.  He was wise beyond his years and knowledgeable in the scripture of the Scope.  He fought and moved with stealth and grace.  Because of his immense talent and ability he often became impatient and dismissive of others.  By some it was seen as arrogance and cockiness.  The reality was his wisdom was often so in advance of others that he would refuse to listen to their advice knowing it to be incorrect or lacking.  As a result Cobra lived the life of a loner wandering the deserts, meditating, fasting and training to become the ultimate warrior, fulfill the prophecy and restore his great race to their rightful position as the guardians of The Realm of Camel Hygiene.  He did not possess the physical power of some of his adversaries but his precision, speed, timing, technique and mental strength meant this was never an issue.

As a young child he traveled to the Palace of the King to compete in the Annual Scope Trials, against other trained fighters, which he easily won.  As the youngest champion ever Wolverine was quick to enroll Cobra as his apprentice alongside Barn Owl and later Hawk.

Very seldom was anyone able to penetrate the shell that Cobra, who as as easterner was considered an outsider anyway, surrounded himself with.  He never let anyone get close to what he felt inside which made him appear as an almost cold-blooded killer.  He has never felt accepted by anyone since he left his family as a small child.

This situation was made worse when one of the few people to gain his respect, Mongoose (his apprentice), was killed by a skirmishing group of Stink Badgers.  Cobra blamed his friends death on himself and retreated further into his cocoon vowing never to let anybody get so close to him as Mongoose once did.

As his mentor Wolverine is one of the few people who can get Cobra to show glimpses of the snake within himself.  To the rest of the Scope Knights he is seen as an arrogant, humourless, emotionless, but nonetheless respected, skilled, feared, and vital member of the team.
