The most unique and suprising game for the Nintendo GameCube at E3 had to be Shigeru Myimoto's newest game, Pikmin.
First of all, Pikmin is in no way related to Pokemon.
It's a new original game, that can best be discribed as a simple, yet deep, Real-time Strategy (RTS) game.
In Pikmin, you are a astronaut, who's ship has just crash landed an a weird planet, inhabited by these unique creatures called Pikmin.
The planet's atmosphere is toxic, so the astronaut makes a deal with the Pikmin, if he will help them to grow and flourish, then they will help him find the scattered pieces of his ship, and help rebuild it, so he can fly home.
Pikmin come in a variety of different colors (red, blue, and yellow) each with their own personality. There are three stages of growth for a Pikmin (I think they are seed, bud, then flower), and they gain new attributes depending on the stage they are at.
As the spaceman, you need to take care of them and help them grow.
You pick Pikmin from the ground, and then take them to their "base" where they can be planted and start to grow.
Pikmin can be used for a variety of different purposes. They can get things and carry them back to the base, they can build bridges and walls, tear down things, defeat enemies, etc.
You can have over 100 Pikmin at one time (extras are stored at your base) and they can all take care of separate tasks simountanisly.
You can use the A Button to throw Pikmin, and the B Button to call Pikmin back to you.
The C Stick can be used to control herds of Pikmin at a time (Up to a hundred).
Pikmin has some outstanding graphics, effects, and detail. You can actually see cracks in the dirt! All the plants have been realistically portrayed and time (Night and day) flows as you go through the game.
Pikmin was thought up by great game designer Shigeru Myimoto (The maker of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, F-Zero and just about every other great Nintendo game).
Myimoto has recently gotten into gardening and the natural environment, and he got the idea one day when he was planting, and saw some ants. He watched them as they scurried along, bringing in food and stuff and building their "base". The Pikmin are like a cross between an ant, and a plant. They are both.
Even for the game, he and his time walked around his backyard and his neighborhood, taking pictures of plants and getting references for the game. Many of those pictures were used in making the game. Mainly the plants and the environments. They even looked at the Sun and how it shines through the plants and creates shadows and stuff. It's things like that that will realistically be portrayed in the game.
Pikmin will be a launch title for the GameCube on November 5th in the US. And Myimoto is sure this will be a hit. And I think so too. After reading about it, it sounds pretty cool and interesting. Be sure to get this game. Maybe it'll even start a new RTS series. lol. Nonetheless, be sure to check it out. It's almost guaranteed to be a great game, it is from Myimoto after all :-)
