Man, does this suck. Looks like Retro Studios now only has one product in the works because, well . . . their cool looking Action RPG game Raven Blade has officially been CANCELLED!!
Announced a couple of days ago (July 19 or 20th, 2001), Nintendo said that they have cancelled the game Raven Blade for the Nintendo GameCube by Retro Studios. The reason is so that Retro can put all of it's resources and man-power into their other project, by far one of the most ambitious games for GameCube, Metroid Prime.
According to Nintendo, they are only concerned in getting Metroid Prime completed on time, and making it a great game. By cancelling Raven Blade, that free's up a lot of the stress, as they no longer have to be concerned about getting both products finished, and can thus concentrate all of their efforts on doing Metroid.
Retro also laid off a lot of the people who were working on Raven Blade, and only the key people from that project were kept. They, of course, have been moved over to the Metroid project.
Looks like Nintendo is determined to make Metroid Prime a great game, and are willing to do everything in their power to do so. Even if it means cancelling a couple projects.
Retro needs to get this game done on time (Without taking five years to complete) while still having it be a fantastic game that meets everyone's humungous expectations. It's a HUGE project, and needs to be done right.
Well, all I can say is that Retro Studios sure has their work cut out for them. I hope Metroid gets completed and still turns out to be a good . . . scratch that . . . FANTASTIC game. They are losing hope and respect it seems with every coming announcement of the game, and their street cred so far isn't to good.
If they can manage to do a good job on Metroid Prime, I think Nintendo might still have some faith left in them, but if not . . . Well, they probably won't be around for to long. All I have to say is:
Good Luck Retro!
(Below is some information about the game that I wrote before it got cancelled. Retro might still continue to work on this game, after Metroid is complete that is, so I'm going to just leave it up. Here it is below: Basically unchanged from what I last wrote.)
Another game being made by Nintendo second party Retro Studios is a RPG called Raven Blade.
Hardly anything is known about the game though.
We know it won't be a traditional menu driven RPG, but will be more in real-time. It will, like most traditional RPG's though, have more of a fantasy based plot: dragons, castles, that sort of thing.
Raven Blade repotatly hasn't been progressing very good, and Retro is having a hard time getting the game, especially the battle system to work right.
While I think the game has pretty good promise, I don't know, at this speed, how things will turn out. Hopefully Retro will be able to give us a decent RPG, but things aren't looking good so far. Like I said about Metroid, good luck Retro :-)
