Garbage
A string of unwanted or unintelligible characters produced by error.

Gateway
The technical meaning is a hardware or software set-up that translates between two dissimilar protocols, for example Prodigy has a gateway that translates between its internal, proprietary e-mail format and Internet e-mail format. Another, sloppier meaning of gateway is to describe any mechanism for providing access to another system, e.g. AOL might be called a gateway to the Internet.

Connection point between two e-mail systems or networks that use different protocols. A computer or other device acts as a translator to communicate across different protocols.

Geek
Someone who knows a lot about computers and very little else. See also nerd.

Geeking out
When geeks who are bite-bonding start playing with a computer during a non-computer-related social event.

General MIDI specifiaction
Defines a standard setup for MIDI files, including channel settings, instrument patch settings ,and key assignments.

GIF
Graphics Interchange Format. A graphics file format that originated on the CompuServe network. Most client programs that include graphics support GIF, for example, GIF is the standard file format for graphics files on the World Wide Web. Developers must pay royalties for utilities and programs that use the GIF format. The most commonly used graphics format on the Web. A graphics Library for Fast GIF Creation.

Gopher
This popular protocol lets clients retrieve Internet resources. The Gopher protocol lets you access flies and directories across the Internet. A Gopher client can search and retrieve information from hundreds of gopher servers on the Internet to give the user a seamless view of the distributed information.

A system that displays Internet documents. You just select a menu choice and the gopher will either display a document or transfer you to a different gopher system. Gophers get their name from the mascot of the University of Minnesota, where the first gopher system was born.U of Minn. Gopher Menu.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)
A computer application that uses pictures, graphics, menus, and English commands to help users communicate with their computers. See GUI.

Graphics mode
The mode that enables applications to display images in addition to text, Windows applications always run in graphics mode.

Graphics resolution
The level of quality at which applications print graphics. The higher the resolution the better the quality of the printed graphics. Higher-resolution graphics take longer to print and use more disk space. A resolution of 72 Is good for .GIF and .JPG most of the time.

Grep
To rapidly scan a large amount of data looking for a specific string or pattern.

GUI
Graphical User Interface. A computer interface based on graphical symbols rather than text. The Macintosh operating system and Microsoft Windows are examples of GUI's. See Graphical User Interface.

Guru
A expert you go to for help, information, or training.

GZip
GNU Zip. A compression scheme, used primarily by UNIX systems, to compact files to save storage space and reduce the time it takes to transfer files. GZip was created to eliminate patent constraints that exist with other compression schemes.The Archive Utility for Windows.
