A link found on almost everyone's Hotlist. "yahoo must be on every Hotlist on the planet. It's a total ubiquilink.
Unicode
Unicode is a code which assigns a number to each key on a keyboard. Unicode is newer and includes many characters not found in ASCII such as international characters and alphabets.
UNIX
A computer operating system (the basic software running on a computer, underneath things like word processors and spreadsheets). UNIX is designed to be used by many people at the same time (it is multi-user) and has TCP/IP built-in. It is the most common operating system for servers on the Internet.

A popular multi user, multitasking operating system developed by AT&T. UNIX served as a foundation for the development of the Internet and continues to be the operating system of choice for most Internet servers. TCP/IP is built into UNIX.
Upload
Send a file to a file server or another computer, usually by an FTP program.
Upper memory area
The 384K area of address space adjacent to the 640K of conventional memory. This area is usually reserved for running your systems hardware, such as your monitor, and is not considered part of total memory because applications cannot store information in this area.
Upper memory blocks
UMBs. Area of the upper memory area that contain general- purpose memory and that can be used to hold device drivers or other memory resident programs in order to leave more conventional memory available for applications.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator, An addressing scheme used to link resources by way of the World Wide Web. All clients let you move directly to any supported Internet resource when you enter a URL address.

USENET
A world-wide system of discussion groups, with comments passed among hundreds of thousands of machines. Not all USENET machines are on the Internet, maybe half. USENET is completely decentralized, with over 30,000 discussion areas, called Newsgroups.mg's Fabulous News Page.
User
A person who uses software or hardware.
User ID
The user identification name used to logon to a network or an Internet server.
Utility
A computer program that performs a useful function.
UUCP
UNIX to UNIX copy. A facility for transferring e-mail and network news in batch form. UUCP is an affordable way for several e-mail accounts to exist under a domain name without using a LAN IP account
UUENCODE
UNIX to UNIX Encoding. A method for converting files from Binary to ASCII (text) so that they can be sent across the Internet via e-mail.
UUencoding
A standard for encoding binary data. UUencoding lets you transmit binary data as 7 bit ASCII data. Once received, the data can be UUdecoded into its original binary format.
