Image map
Also called a clickable image. An image containing areas that have been defined to act as hypertext links. There are two types of image maps; Server side and client side (CSIM).

A "clickable" inline image that takes you to a different link, depending on which part of the image you click on.

Index files
Files created by waisindex that make up the WAIS source database.

Infoseek
Internet search engine.Infoseek.

Initialization files
Files with the extension .INI that contain information that defines your applications environment. applications use the information stored in these files

Inline image
A graphic image that is displayed with an html document.

Interlacing
Images can be saved in an interlaced format, so that rather than consecutively displaying the lines that make up the image, the image displays every eighth line and than every fourth line so that the viewer can see a preview. Presenting interlaced images lets the reader begin scrolling through the page while the image loads. Interlaced GIF's, Progressive JPEG's, and PNG's are all examples of interlaced file formats.

Internet
The vast collection of inter-connected networks that all use the TCP/IP protocols and that evolved from the ARPANET of the late 60's and early 70's. The Internet now (July 1995) connects roughly 75,000 independent networks into a vast global Internet. Any time you connect 2 or more networks together, you have an Internet. An international computer network of networks that connect government, academic and business institutions.YaHoo.Com.

Internet address
The combination of the IP numeric address and domain name.

Internet explorer
A microsoft Web browser.

InterNIC
Internet Network Information Center. An organization funded by the National Science Foundation to provide information, directory assistance, and domain name registration services. See InterNIC.

Intranet
A private network inside a company or organization that uses the same kinds of software that you would find on the public Internet, but that is only for internal use.

IP
Internet Protocol. The protocol used as a basis of the Internet. The Internet Protocol allows data to travel in packets routed across different networks, than reach their final destination and be reassembled.

IP Number
Internet Protocol Number. Sometimes called a dotted quad, or IP Address. A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots, e.g. 206.51.22.1
Every machine that is on the Internet has a unique IP number - if a machine does not have an IP number, it is not really on the Internet. Most machines also have one or more Domain Names that are easier for people to remember.

IRC
Internet Relay Chat. A multi-user live chat facility. There are a number of major IRC servers around the world which are linked to each other. Anyone can create a channel and anything that anyone types in a given channel is seen by all others in the channel. Private channels can (and are) created for multi-person conference calls.

ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network. A generation of digital telecommunications lines. ISDN lines includes two bearer channels, each of which can handle up to 64 kbps, for a combined capacity of 128 kbps.ISDN FAQ.

ISOC
Internet society. The Internet society promotes the Internet and coordinates standards. You can visit theirWebsite to learn more or become a member.
