LAN
Local Area Network. A computer network limited to the immediate area, usually the same building or floor of a building. Ethernet is one of the more common lan systems.

Leased-line
A telecommunications line, usually digital, that is leased from a service provider or telephone company. Leased lines handle more bandwidth and are charged according to a flat monthly rate instead of a measured rate. For businesses connecting several users to the Internet through a LAN or maintaining connections for long periods of time, a leased line is the most economical option.

Refers to a phone line that is rented for exclusive 24-hour, 7 -days-a-week use from your location to another location. The highest speed data connections require a leased line.

Listserv
An e-mail server program for mailing lists. The most common kind of mail list, Listservs originated on BITNET but they are now common on the Internet.

Live 3D
Live 3D is Netscape Navigator's VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) viewer for displaying 3D worlds.

LiveWire
Netscape Communication's application development system that enables you to create server-based applications similar to Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs. LiveWire pro includes Netscape Navigator Gold, an application manager, a site manager, numerous Web application utilities, and Internet/Intranet server systems such as Netscape's Communication and FastTrack servers.

local loop
The copper wires running between the telephone subscriber's home or business and the phone company switch. Log in
Noun: The account name used to gain access to a computer system. Not a secret contrast with Password.
Verb: The act of entering into a computer system, e.g. Log in to the WELL and then go to the GBN conference.

Luser
A blend of "loser" and "user." Someone who doesn't have the faintest idea what they're doing and, more importantly, this individual refuses to do anything about it.

Lynx
A text-based Web browser used widely with UNIX operating systems. Lynx is also available for dos and other operating systems.Lynx Users Guide Version 2.3.
