proprietary protocol for19200 bps asynchronous communications.

V.32bis
The ITU standard for 14400 bps asynchronous communications.

V.34
The ITU standard for 28800 bps asynchronous communications. While V.34 was under development, some modem manufacturers implemented the unratified standard and called it V.Fast.

Vaccine
A type of program used to locate and eradicate virus code from infected programs or systems.

Vaporlink
A link that points to a non-existent Web page.

Veronica
Very Easy Rodent Oriented Net-wide Index to Computerized Archives. Developed at the University of Nevada, Veronica is a constantly updated database of the names of almost every menu item on thousands of Gopher servers. The Veronica database can be searched from most major gopher menus.Search Gopher Space Using VERONICA.

V.FC
Rockwell's proprietary protocol for 28800 bps asynchronous communications.

V.flex2
Proprietary protocol for 56000 bps Asynchronous communications. Merged with Rockwell's K56Plus to create K56flex.

Viewer applications
Software that gives you access to the images, video, and sounds stored on Internet servers.

Virtual
A commonly used adjective that means having all of the properties of x while not necessarily being x. A virtual reality is an artificial environment that appears to be its own reality.

Virtual commerce
The process of conducting business on the Internet using a combination of tools and establishing a server presence for users.

Virtual drive
See ram drive.

Virtual memory
A memory management system used by applications in 386 enhanced mode that enables applications to run as if there were more memory than is actually present The amount of memory available equals the amount of free RAM memory plus the amount of disk space allocated to a swap file that the application uses to simulate additional RAM.

Virtual storefront
The online version of a full service storefront, including the publishing of sales materials and the capability of processing credit card transactions.Universal Cyber Mall or New Age City.

Virus
Any programming code written to damage computer systems.

Visual basic
A high-level, graphically oriented, fourth generation programming language only used in the windows operating environment.

VMS
A mainframe OS, designed for multiple users. While a similar concept to UNIX the commands and applications are all very different.

VRML
Virtual Reality Modeling Language. Used to create Web sites that are 3-D "worlds" that you "enter" using a VRML-enhanced browser. You can then use your mouse to "move" around this world in any direction.

A language for creating interactive three dimensional rendering, used in conjunction with Web browsers.
