WAN
Wide Area Network. Any Network that covers an area larger than a single building or campus.

WAIS
Wide Area Information Server, a database. A tool that helps you search for documents using keywords or selections of text as search criteria.

A powerful system for searching and retrieving information from databases scattered across the Internet.

WAIS client
An application that formats user defined search criteria to be used by waisserver; the goal is to find matches between search criteria and data files (of all types).

WAIS sources
Databases created by waisindex that include, for example a table of all unique words contained in a document.

WAIS index
A mechanism that extracts data from raw data files (of most types) to put into databases, called WAIS sources, which allow waiserver to match search criteria to data files quickly.

Waveform
commonly called wave files. microsoft windows sound file format. Wave files end with the extension .wav.

Web
See World Wide Web.

Web browser
See browser.

Web host
See Web server.

WebMaster
The person in charge of administrating a Web site. Webmaster's can usually be e-mailed at [email protected].

Web server
A computer that stores your Web pages and hands them out to anyone with a browser that comes calling. Also known as a Web host.

Winsock
A program that conforms to a set of standards called the windows socket API. The windows socket s a standard for implementing windows software with a TCP/IP stack. In other words. a winsock program controls the link between windows software and a TCP/IP program.

Wrackground image
A background image that ruins a page by making the text unreadable. See also Flooded.

Workspace
The area of a window that displays the information contained in the application or document you are working with.

World Wide Web(WWW)
A distributed Hypertext-based information system conceived at CERN to provide its user community an easy way to access global information.

A hypermedia based system for accessing Internet resources. commonly referred to as the Web, it lets users download files, listen to sound, view video files, and jump to other documents or Internet sites by means of hypertext. The Web also includes gateways to sites that use other Internet protocols, such as Gopher and FTP. WWW or W3 are other terms that refer to the World Wide web.
