.WAV
Standard waveform audio file format for Windows. Using the Sound option in Window's Control Panel, sounds can be assigned to different applications and system events; such as, an application's Asterick or Exclamation events. (Tap: [F1] key for help if you need it. ) A .WAV file can be directly converted for use by QuickTime on a MacOS system with System 7's Sound Manager extension (starting with the 3.1 version) and Sound 8.0.4 control panel (or later versions). Other MacOS to-from converters are available. DOS, Unix, and Amiga player utility: Sox.

Wavelets
Compression/decompression algorithm which analyzes the entire image rather than discrete portions of it as other codecs do. (Media Vision may use it in Captain Crunch.) Typically it is used for medical images and video editing.
.WDL
Windows 3.1 Driver Library file. The library contains device drivers made available after that version of Windows was released.
WET
A SCS Netlister's text file describing its Waveform Editor's onscreen waveforms.
.WKS
Microsoft Works file format .
.WK1, .WK2, .WK3, etc.
IBM Lotus 1-2-3s worksheet (spreadsheet) file format. (The source application's version is referenced by the number.) MacOS: access file with Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet. The file has this creator type: XCEL and this File Type: XLW.
.WMF
Word Macro Format created by Microsoft for Word documents. The macros can be used cross-platform among Word documents on Windows 95, Windows NT and MacOS. (If your regular documents are instead saved as templates and/or you lose track of them, it could be the result of a "prank macro" virus; call Microsoft for an antidote.)
.WMF
Window Metafile graphics file format.
.WML
FrameMaker's scripting WebMaker Language document.
~WOA
An application's swap file created when Windows crashed while in standard mode. It may be stored in the startup drive's AUTOEXEC.BAT file's designated TEMP folder. If found&emdash;and at the DOS prompt&emdash;delete all ~WOA files.
Work File location
Many conversion applications require that a portion of the available drive capacity be allocated for storing virtual memory files. This allows a user to open many files and save the virtual memory files on different volumes if necessary. For example, if the initial disk that was selected as the preferred disk does not have enough free space to allow a decompressed image to be stored, a secondary path or disk can be specified and the image will automatically be directed to that location.
.WP4, .WP5, .WP6
WordPerfect™ for PC 4.2, 5.x, and 6.x text or database file formats.
.WPD
Corel WordPerfect file format.
.WPG
WordPerfect™ graphics data-format for DOS/Windows which supports 256 colors. Typically, only bitmapped .WPG files can be converted. Note, some of the early WP for Windows 256-color display drivers caused Unrecoverable Application Errors. If suspected, try a 16-color driver.
.WPG
Corel WordPerfect graphics file format.
.WQ1
Quattro Pro spreadsheet file format. (The source application's version is referenced by the number.)
.wri
A Microsoft WRITE document file, typically named README.WRI. To open, In the Windows Program Manager's Main group window, select the file.
.WRK, .WRI
Symphony document format.
.WRL
A file extension format used to make a Web server VRML-capable. Just add this extension along with MIME type (x-world/x-vrml) to the server's configuration file so that the server will tell its clients to launch the proper viewer and download a VRML file.
.WS, .WS5
WordStar™ 3.3 - 5.x text or database file format. (The application's version is referenced by the number.)
.WST
WordStar™ 6.x text or database file format.
X11 and XBM
X Window bitmap graphics data-format.
. XBM
Image bitmap still-video format for X-Windows.
. XL2
Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file format.
.XLC
Microsoft Excel's Graphic file format.
. XLS
Microsoft Excel's worksheet file format for v3.0 to 5.0 and Excel for Windows 7.0.
. XLT
Microsoft Excel's template file format which serves as a basic pattern&emdash;text, formulas, styles, formats, charts, and macro sheets&emdash;used to simplify the creation of new documents similar to template.
XTML
Thw eXcel Table Markup Language for Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet documents.
XWD
X Window's bitmapped graphics screen dump data-format that supports two colors.

.XY3
XyWrite™ III or III+ text or database file format.

YUV
A data-compression scheme for video that stores separately and at different ratios, brightness or luminance (Y) and color or chrominance (UV) components. The eye is much more sensitive to the Y component than U and V. For onscreen "sampling," the YUV components of a pixel are deleted consistently throughout the image to achieve compression while minimizing its effect upon the quality of the image. However, a compression ratio only applies to a portion of the current image displayed on screen; the ratio changes according to the varying amounts of detail in the image.

The higher the compression, the lower the picture quality. A high compression ratio, for example YUV 6:1:1, uses 6 bits of luminance for every U bit of chrominance and 6 bits of luminance for every V bit of chrominance. This ratio may also be stated as a 6:1 (6-to-1) compression. Video YUV is encoded as Red, Green and Blue (RGB) in computers. (YUV represents how the eye perceives visual information.) The ultimate objective of compression is the real-time playback of video, at 30 frames per second, without loss of quality.

. Z
Unix compression/decompression (codec) format. Use StuffIt Expander to decode files for MacOS compatibility.
. ZIP
A compressed file created by a PKZIP codec application. Developed by PKWARE, it is based on the CRC-32 algorithm by David Schwaderer. An additional feature of PKZIP is the ability to encrypt files before compressing them. Compressed DOS/Windows files have a filename extension of .ZIP. MacOS systems can use UnZip, by Peter Maika or Aladdin's free StuffIt Expander to decompress DOS/Windows .ZIP files.

To zip MacOS files for transfer to DOS/Windows systems, use UnZip or Tommy Brown's $10 shareware ZipIt or a similar utility. UnZip can also create "self-extracting" compressed files which include the necessary codes to decompress automatically (when double clicked). Self-extracting files have this filename extension: .EXE. DOS/Windows applications cannot read the MacBinary format; before zipping a document for transfer, make sure the utility disables this option.
