PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENTS:
· 9 years on the USS Portsmouth - Ops Manager
· Various other assignments within the Fleet

PRIME MOTIVATIONS:
· Knowledge. A need to understand.
· In a way, love for life, for learning.

AMBITIONS:
· To make Captain some day.
· To have a wife and family.

GENERAL PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION:  Quiet, intellectual. Not openly emotional if he’s feeling bad, but intense. Friendly, but doesn’t get close to too many people. He jokes around, but not all the time, and has a sense of the appropriate. Conversely, he has a flair for the dramatic which sometimes appears in his command style, but he knows when to show it and when to stow it. He is brilliant, and kind, with an inner strength. He is compassionate and sensitive beneath his outer layer, and needs a friend to show it to. He is full of deep emotion.

HOBBIES/RECREATION:
· Twentieth Century Earth literature and "television" programs collector, particularly science fiction.
· Sharash’di (like chess but with traps and up to eight can play at a time).
· Diving/water sports.
· Racket ball, occasionally.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:   Tall, athletic build, square shoulders tapering to narrow hips. Longish chiseled face, handsome. Short black hair. Dark brown skin, brown eyes (Faint English Birmingham/West Midlands accented speech.) (6’5")

WHY CHARACTER JOINED STARFLEET:   Space had fascinated him ever since he was a child, and he wanted to see it for himself.

PERSONAL HISTORY:   Born in Copernicus City, Luna. Worked his way up through the ranks to end up serving on the USS Portsmouth as Ops Manager. When the First Officer became ill for an extended period of time, he took over as Acting Executive Officer and distinguished himself in many situations, earning his promotion to Commander and the Fairburn posting.

PERSONAL DETAILS:
· He has a friend on the Portsmouth who still searches out old sci-fi shows for him; Aslen Framkesson. She wanted him to be her lover, but he preferred their friendship.
· He hasn’t found anyone he’s interested in romantically yet, so he concentrated on his career. He will slowly become aware of an attraction to the Counsellor.
· If he was offered the choice between a Captaincy or a wife and kids, he’d probably keep the family intact above all else.
· He spends a lot of time alone by choice. He’s a private kind of man who gets enjoyment from certain solitary activities such as reading, 3D video watching and the like. As time progresses and he gets to know his workmates better, he’d invite them to screenings of his collection, particularly Red Dwarf and Babylon 5 (remember, Star Trek doesn’t exist on this timeline; it IS the timeline!).
· His mother is a historian and sometime archaeologist devoted to exploring her own people’s past (North Africa - Kenya), while his father was a lesser officer in the science division of Starfleet. The children were named for prominent people from these interests; Christopher (Pike), Steven (Biko), Thomas (_____) and James (Kirk). James is the youngest.
· His mother is a character, but not like Lwaxana Troi is a character! She values strength of character, of self and spirit. She has her own sense of a greater purpose, and is a little disappointed that James has no belief like that, and isn’t interested in history; but she won’t harp on about tradition like Lwaxana does.
· He HATES being called "Jim" and won’t respond to it, ever.

FAMILY DETAILS:
· Mother - Halin, alive
· Father - Michael, alive
· Brother - Christopher Joseph Grieg, trader, alive
· Brother - Steven Isaac Grieg, whereabouts unknown, alive at last report.
· Brother - Thomas, Geologist, alive

FAMILY HISTORY: Parents live in Copernicus City, though more often his retired father can be found at the archaeological dig site they co-run in Kenya. It was his mother who introduced James to ancient books and televids. His father was often off on exo-archaeological digs or Starfleet research missions, but has since retired. He hasn’t seen his brother Steven in seven years - after an argument with their mother, he stormed out and hasn’t been seen by them since, though every so often, they get reports of his whereabouts.

SECRETS IN BACKGROUND?:   There is something decidedly interesting in the way his emotions seem to reflect those of people around him and vice versa… Is he empathic?

FUTURE MILESTONES?:
· It will take about a year or so from their first meeting for him to become aware of his feelings for the Counsellor, though she is aware of them before he is!
· At some point (later?) in the first year, K’Teira takes a phaser blast meant for him.

DETAIL RELATIONSHIPS WITH:

Susan Randall:   She is a good Captain to learn from, to teach him how to cut through crap and how not to be quite so bogged down in complexities. She is a mentor and a close friend, though he is irritated by her search for a mate for him!

K'Teira:   To begin with he found this enigma fascinating, then a good friend. He appreciates her views on life, and likes it that she doesn’t "turn Counsellor" unless he really needs it. They have a lot in common, and she knew his feelings for her had gone beyond friendship before he did, but he’s practical and while she isn’t romantically interested in him, he’s content to remain friends. They often share games of Sharash’di.

Eden Pendehar:   James’ father served with him when they were younger (Eden was newly out of the Academy, and they met when James was visiting his father whilst on break from the Academy), so James and Eden have been friends for years. Eden is the one James "complains at" if he has "woman problems" (would you tell your problems to Daniels?) and Eden isn’t behind the door in doing the same. Eden isn’t his best friend - K’Teira’s probably be that - but they are very close. They often argue - or "discuss things very loudly" - but despite the mental image this produces, it’s actually quite controlled; more an intellectual bandying around of ideas than a true fight. Eden thinks James should listen to his emotional side more; James thinks Eden should review Starfleet Law!

Rell:   He likes Rell, and respects - is even in awe of - the body of knowledge the Bolian has on the ship and its function; and as he feels needs a little more life away from space or Engineering, he often invites him along on diving expeditions. He loves Rell’s stories, and sometimes feels he has to return the favour.

Elek:   He doesn’t know Elek, but he likes her work and approach to things.  He gets the feeling there is something not quite right about her, something she isn’t telling, but is more than willing to let it go. She is an exemplary officer in his mind, so he doesn’t worry about minutiae unless it is endangering the ship, which Elek certainly isn’t. If Elek wasn’t so mindful of rank, they’d probably get to be friends of a sort.

Ian Randall:   It took a little while for James to balance the idea of Ian as a person apart from his wife; it was hard to make decisions when he was aware Ian might go home and complain. Yet being professionals they became accustomed to it, and James soon learned after working with Ian that he could look after himself without help from his wife! Ian is a thorn in James’ side, but he does respect everything the erratic-seeming Administrator is trying to do.

Thomas Moore:  He would respect Moore in a lot of ways, but they would butt heads over their very different command styles and their different attitudes towards diplomacy.  In time they might get to a point where they could discuss their literature collections.  Might.

Kylen Dubois:  They'd get along quite well, especially given her interest in 20th century literature.  However he'd be a little put out if she laughed in the wrong places in a serious part of his collection such as Babylon 5!  Well, if they weren't deliberately having a pick-on night, that is...

Berry Mogaddi: An amazing woman with many, many skills.  He's slightly in awe of her, and will every so often get an odd "mental" feeling around her.  This may prevent a true friendship forming here.

Matthew Daniels:   Once he got used to Daniels’ informality, he accepted the Chief as a talented officer who was worthy of his position. James has even been known to invite him to screenings of Red Dwarf, knowing that Daniels would like it, its humour aligning itself to his!

Jedera:   He’s amused by Jedera’s quiet observations, and they often engage in long conversations when they’re on the bridge together, or when they’re at a meeting of the Regulars.

Jondalar Barlok:   He and Jondalar talk often, and he even gets Jondalar to teach him Mantanan piloting techniques. They swap stories and ideas, and sometimes bore the Regulars (save Jedera!) to tears!

Lisa Willbanks:   A good doctor, and one of the Regulars he occasionally talks to. He is unaware of her crush on him.

Viana Jancris:

Joenn:   Someone who needs guidance, and is fun to talk with amongst the Regulars. He agrees that she should be eased into a Command role, but feels she has to be nurtured, and taken slowly into the idea.

Chianeé Deserine:   She’s a kind soul who likes to relax those who come into her range/lounge - they’re friends in a distant kind of way.
