NICKNAMES/ALIASES:  N/A

RANK:  Lieutenant Commander

SPECIES:  Human

GENDER:  Male

HOMEWORLD:  Sol III (Earth)

PLANET OF BIRTH: Sol III (Earth)

MARITAL STATUS:  Married to Susan Randall

RELIGION/BELIEFS:  N/A

PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENTS:
·  12 years at Starfleet Headquarters - science division.

PRIME MOTIVATIONS:
· His work and his family.

AMBITIONS:

GENERAL PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION:  Brilliant, but a little erratic outside of his work.  He has a nasty temper when things aren't going right, though he has learned to control this to some degree.  He has a biting, often sarcastic wit that can make lesser individuals duck for cover.  He is patient and understanding with his team, and he knows how to get the best out of people.  He may seem laconic and lazy, but this attitude means he has his mind on important matters - never mistake this for a lack of focus.  He is loving, in his way, for he is not publically demonstrative.

HOBBIES/RECREATION:
·  A gliding program (not hang gliding, though) on the holodeck.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:  Average height, medium build, slightly "lumpy".  Plain features, unruly sandy red curls that give him an unkempt look.  Sloppy posture when tired.  Pink skin, green/hazel eyes.  (Faint Australian accent)(5'10").

WHY CHARACTER JOINED STARFLEET:  Where else can you be exposed to new technologies and theories if you're in the right place at the right time, instead of waiting for everyone else to get to it and publish it first?

PERSONAL HISTORY:  Born in Melbourne, Australia, Earth.  Married Susan during their tenure at the Academy, even though they knew they were probably going to be assigned to different places.  Fifteen years later, he wasn't happy for her when she chose to retire, feeling she was throwing away her career and all she had worked towards, but she gave him no choice and he became resigned to it.  He loved having her at home, but always wanted her to go back.  He was assigned to the Fairburn first - he jokes that it was in order to force her back into the Fleet!  He mightn't be far wrong...

PERSONAL DETAILS:
·  He travelled a lot when he was younger and met a lot of different peoples.
·  His speciality is astrophysics, but his interests range throughout the science spectrum.
·  He has a tendency to want to hurry Susan up when he feels she isn't fast enough to get to official functions!
·  He's very good with computers.
·  He'll help the Captain to wind down at night, talking her through the day's events and giving her massages, etc.

FAMILY DETAILS:

·  Wife - Susan Randall, Captain USS Fairburn, alive
·  Daughter - Lillian Patricia Randall, student, alive
·  Son - Jason Barry Randall, student, alive

FAMILY HISTORY:   (see Susan Randall

SECRETS IN BACKGROUND?:

FUTURE MILESTONES?

DETAIL RELATIONSHIPS WITH:

Susan Randall:  He likes nothing better than to bait her; see how far he can push before she'll snap back, but it's always jokingly and with a twinkle in his eye.  He's not very demonstrative when outsiders are around, but he deeply loves her none-the-less, and desperately wants her to succeed.

James Grieg:  Grieg is the one he has to clear his decisions with and has to request extra power or sensor time from, and Ian has a tendency of being rather tenacious in his demands.  This has made their working relationship rather strained, but given time they would discover a similarity in their recreational tastes - Grieg would enjoy Ian's gliding program, for instance.

K’Teira"Hey, Counsellor - what was the word for disgustingly horrible in Andorian again?"  "Rssssiixthanagh, Commander."  "Thanks!"  Apart from finding her a useful tool in discovering new swearwords to hurl at failed experiments, he would find it strange she's a  Counsellor, but would agree she's ok at it.

Eden Pendehar:  They'd be good friends, and in a scientific sort of way would give each other what the other needs.

Rell:  They don't meet much, Rell being so (self) restricted to Engineering.  Ian gets annoyed at the stories now and then, sometimes telling the Bolian to get to the point.

Elek:  A Vulcan is a Vulcan is a Vulcan is...  Efficiency and logic aren't the only things going in science though, no matter how much he values them in her; he wishes she would lighten up on certain of his officers that don't need the added pressure, but also understands they need to learn to cope, for there are worse than Elek out there.

Thomas Moore: These two would collide head on, both being totally committed to totally different ideals - to one, Starfleet is an explorer and scientific discovery organization, whereas to the other, it is the military arm of the Federation.

Kylen Dubois:  Knowing what he does of her experiences with the Cardassians, etc, has coloured his perceptions of her, but he finds her friendly and appreciates her information from her mother's dig.

Berry Mogaddi:  Nice girl, but compared to K'Teira, a bit of a non-event (Counsellors are a waste of resources in his humble opinion - K'Teira's enough of an oddity to rate).

Matthew Daniels:  He doesn't understand why Susan has such a twit in such an important position - he keeps waiting for Daniels' lack of care to rebound into their collective faces.

Jedera:  An excellent workmate who is a constant reminder to Ian of what a true love of science is.  Jedera's enthusiasm for his work has a tendency to perk up everyone else's, and Ian can't imagine a better Second.  They are friends, but more formal than true "pals" would be.

Jondalar Barlok:  Jondalar is often a big help to sciences with his monumental knowledge base and wide ranging interests and ideas.  Ian sometimes wonders about Jondalar's attention span though, for he always has a new interest evey time he appears in the labs.

Lisa Willbanks:  He doesn't know her well, but he secretly enjoys their "sarcasm fights" which he invariably wins as her emotions (ie, anger) get in the way.

Viana Jancris:

Joenn:  He's impressed with her skill but not so much with her lack of confidence.  He encourages her and would like to see her go through the ranks.

Chianeé Deserine:  She's a little too familiar for his tastes.
