Infantry
The infantry is the weakest
unit. They're useful in the first levels as part of your army. Starting
with level 4 (tech level 3) they become pretty useless. They're good only
as a anti-trooper and anti-fremen defence.
Troopers
The troopers are useless against
all soldiers, but they're good against vehicles and buildings. They're
the most efficient worm-killers. In large numbers, they're very useful
in any level, but be careful! Always protect them from infantry!
Engineer
This is a specialized soldier.
He can't fight, but he can capture enemy buildings by simply entering them.
Use engineers whenever you can, but beware of the enemy ones!
Trike
This is the weakest vehicle
around. It's only useful before level 4 (tech level 3) and as a scout.
Raider
The raider is an Ordos special
unit. It replaces the trike and it can't be bought from the starport. It
has more speed, armor and firepower than the normal trike. It's the fastest
thing on land. It's only useful before level 4, but it's also an excellent
scout. There's a "legend" among advanced Dune2k players that the raider
can outrun a sonic blast. I don't know if it's true.
Combat tank
--
This is the standard battle
tank. It's always useful, because it's an all-purpose vehicle. Each house
has it's own model. The ordos one is faster, but with less armour, the
atreides one is average and the harkonnen one is slower, but with more
armour. The atreides one can easily be killed. If you're ordos you can
outrun it and if you're harkonnen you can outgun it. The ordos and harkonnen
ones can each be killed quite easily by the other, if that player knows
how to use his advantage.
Missile launcher
The launcher is an accurate
long range anti-vehicle and anti-building weapon. It's pretty useless against
soldiers, but that's no problem. The launcher has the biggest range of
all. If placed properly, it can outrange a R-turret. Some say that the
ordos can't have it, because they can only order it from the starport.
That doesn't make sense. So what if they can only get it from the starport?
I never build from factories when I have a starport, because buying units
from there is ALWAYS cheaper. Besides, the ordos can have a starport at
level 5, while the others can't.
Siege tank
The siege tank fires inaccurate,
but powerful cannonballs. They're excellent against soldiers and buildings.
They produce splash damage around the place where they land. Once, I've
seen a siege tank kill a group of troopers with a cannonball which landed
next to them, not on them.
Harvester
There's nothing to say about
the harvester except that it repairs itself to half-health.
Carryall
This airunit is used especially
for airlifting harvesters, but it also takes units to the repair pad.
It repairs itself to half-health.
Ornithopter
The ornithopter is a special
atreides airunit. It's a fast, light-armored bomber. R-turrets and launchers
can easily take it out of the sky. It explodes in the air, so it doesn't
crash on anything.
MCV
You know what it does. Just
deploy it to have an extra const. yard
Deviator
The deviator is a special ordos
unit. It's a modified launcher which fires special gas. The gas takes over
enemy vehicles (temporarely) and it does 1/100 damage on infantry and buildings.
With a lot of these, you could kill your enemy with his own army. They're
excellent!
Sonic tank
This is a special atreides unit.
It fires sonic blasts. It's especially good against infantry. The problem
is that the sonic blast affects anything in its path, including friendly
units. Sonic tanks are really stupid. I've seen once a s-tank fireing at
an enemy soldier through a whole squad of fremen, killing them all. The
sonic tank's range is smaller than the launcher's and the deviator's.
Devastator
The devastator is a special
harkonnen unit. It fires devastating plasma. It has a huge armor. However,
it's the slowest unit in the game and it has a very small range. It can
self-destruct and damage anything around it. It's great weakness is the
deviator. It deviates it with one, maximum two shots. Then the ordos can
just move it away from their base and self-destruct it.
Fremen
These are just invisible troopers
that the atreides get from their palace. They become visible when they
fire, so you can squish 'em. Also, they become visible when they're close
to enemy soldiers. They're absolutely useless.
Death hand
The death hand is a special
harkonnen unit you can get from the hakonnen palace. It's a multi-warhead
nuclear missile. It can't be destroyed. However, it's inaccurate and it
takes FOREVER to build. If you're harkonnen, don't center your army around
it. If you're not, don't worry too much about it.
Saboteur
This is the ordos' special palace
weapon. I think it's the best palace weapon of all. It builds fast and
It's deadly. When a saboteur enters a building, it blows up(he also dies).
The saboteur can go invisible for a period of time, then he must recharge.
At the ordos last level, I destroyed ALL the enemy bases using only saboteurs.
The problem is it takes time to learn how to use it. You must know how
to find a hole in the enemy defences. The best entry point is a place with
no soldiers in site(the enemy soldiers make it visible when they're close).
Sardaukar
The
sardaukar is the special unit of the emperor. It's a sort of Universal
Soldier. In large numbers, they're unstoppable. Fortunately, the emperor
never uses them in large numbers. Never destroy the emperor's palace! Capture
it to get sardaukar!
Sand worm
The worm doesn't belong to anyone. It's native to Arrakis. It likes to
have your army for dinner, but it can't eat soldiers. Kill it with troopers.
Thumper
This is a multiplayer-only unit
which attracts worms. It's only useful to take the worm somewhere far away
and keep it there. It has the least armor of all units.
If you have the v1.06 patch,
you'll also get these units in multiplayer:
Grenadier
The
grenadier is a special atreides unit. It's useless, except against infantry.
Harkonnen sardaukar
It's
different from the imperial sardaukar, because it's a bit weaker and a
lot more expensive.
Stealth raider
This
special ordos unit is the ultimate scout. It's an invisible raider. I always
build many of them. I use them for scouting, but also for distracting (the
enemy will use all his soldiers to discover your raiders, while you attack
with saboteurs) and for sneak attacks (a harvester is harvesting peacefully
in a spice field... there's nobody in sight. Suddenly, 30 raiders appear
out of nowere and annihilate it, then they dissapear again). |
