You May Never Know
You may never know how close you came
To losing this sorrowful soul
Or how close you came to experiencing
That policeman's knock upon your door
The one who has steeled himself
To deliver the sad, sad news
"I'm sorry Mr. and Mrs.…
but he's not coming home tonight"
You may never know how close you came
To preparing the funeral for your son
You may never have to explain to the youngest
Where his brother has gone
I always held the depression inside
Not wanting to worry my father or brother
Far too proud to let on to my mother
Just how close I was to leaving.
It wasn't fear that kept me here
Rather some hidden strength of will
And though the depression still holds me
I live with it, for now
So you may never know how I think
Or that I feel the way that I do
You may never appreciate my life
Until the day that it's gone
