The False Smile
Forever changed on one fateful day
That killed my youth and buried it away
Undiscovered, the murderer went free
Ever doomed to carry that burden within me
With innocence turned evil, there was no turning back
The bridges were burned, leaving nothing but black
Only ashes remained of the one I used to be
Charred by the hatred that kindled within me
Never discovered, truth ever confined
Locked in the blackest depths of my mind
Hidden by years, and shrouded with fears
The corpse of the real me was left far behind
Of my past, no more is to be told
My new life is bitter, empty, and cold
I've lost all hope, my soul has been sold
In visions, I watch my new destiny unfold
Doomed to look upon happiness
Doomed to watch others love
Doomed to see what I cannot own
The hand of fate has an iron glove
So I made a mask that mimics yours
To hide my mind's unending wars
Using sanity to mask the insane
To keep the nightmares well contained
I smile, a pretense to join your game
To make you believe that I'm just the same
As anyone else that you may know
I can't let you see that it's only a show
I am determined to hide
All that's real, deep inside
And you'll never know I've lied
As long as I keep the false smile wide
