"What!"
"Okay let's word this a different way, have you ever had sexual intercourse with his mother."
Jordan vaguely remembered a night about 7 years ago, before she'd got into the drugs. They were friends and had got together one night, but they'd both been protected and they both were drunk.
"There was one night about 7 years ago, but I had a condom, and she was on the pill."
"Well obviously she wasn't because she had Evan around that time and a condom isn't 100% safe. Jordan, the DNA tests prove with a 99.9% accuracy rate that you are Evan's father. Your blood was the closest match to his too." The doctor suddenly got up "You will excuse me, I'm being paged." Jordan faintly heard a page above, he was too in shock from the information he just received.
~~~
"You're WHAT" Rodelyn yelled in the middle of the emergency room attracting attention from the other people in the vicinity. She stared at Jordan incredulously as he repeated what the doctor had just told him.
"I'm Evan's father." Jordan said quietly, almost mute. He was taking this all in slowly, coming to terms with it. If anything this was the biggest shock for him. For the past six years he'd been under the impression that Evan's father was some dope dealer, some failed drug filled relationship when in fact, he'd been the one to bring him into this life. How could he not have thought of that? Denial had tried to strike him some time ago, but he could not deny it. He didn't want to. He thought of all the times he'd wish he could just take Evan out of that environment and show him a better life. He would get to do that, he was his father. He looked at Rodelyn, his expression changing as he stared. The look in her eyes scared him though. It was a look of betrayal, a look of deep regret and then she turned and walked away.
"Rod? Where are you going? I know this is a shock but..." Jordan rushed after her and pulled her arm as she quickly walked through the sliding doors.
"Stop, let go of me Jordan" she twisted out of his grasp. "This is not something I want to be tangled up in." He had a son, and he'd slept with a drug addict. Questions filled her head. "This is just too much for me." She jerked free and ran out to her truck, Jordan on her heels. "Rod listen to me. I was in shock too, but, he's mine, I can't deny that. In fact, I'm beginning to feel glad." She stopped and turned to him as he continued. "I can take him away from all of this, I can show him the life he deserves, and the life I want him to have. Think about it Rod. Don't you think he deserves something good in his life for a change?" He pleaded with her through his eyes.
"But Jordan, you slept with her. She's a drug addict. Was it just once?" She looked him in the eye "Did you do drugs too?" It was a question she didn't want to ask, but had too. She would never have expected him to have been into drugs. Maybe experimented back during the time of his fame, but
"No. No I never did drugs. I remember now, this was all before she was into the drugs too. It was late one night, we were drunk, things happened. Evan happened." He remembered everything now. "I don't know how I could have forgotten, but I do know that I was a bit of a long string of guys she'd been after. I guess I assumed that she'd slept with all of them too. He remembered all the men she'd hung out with. They weren't good for her, obviously. That was how her drug filled life began. As they stood out there, the doctor walked up to them from the hospital.
"Mr. Knight?"
Jordan turned around "Yes?"
"You need to come quick. There's something wrong."
There was nothing else that needed to be said as Jordan and Rodelyn ran back into the hospital followed by the doctor. As they neared Evans room they saw nurses and other doctors rushing into Evans room with equipment. Jordan tried to push through them to be with Evan, but he was not allowed.
"Sir, you're going to have to stand back." A doctor pushed him out of the room.
"What?! No, that's my son in there, what the hell is wrong?" Jordan part yelled part cried as he saw them strap a defibrillator to Evans chest.
"I'm going to have to ask you to stand outside until we are through in here sir." The doctor stood between Jordan and Evan. Thoughts of punching the doctor ran through his mind. He was acting so coldly as they attempted to start Evans heart. Jordan looked on in a panic. The doctor nodded for him to step outside and then went to Evan's bedside. Jordan, defeated and helpless, limply walked back out of the room. Rodelyn stood outside crying, and when she saw Jordan she pulled him away from the big window.
"Jordan." Rodelyn pulled him into her arms. The look of anguish on his face hurt her so much, the doctor came over to explain that Evan had suffered acute cardiac arrest and they'd been trying to restart his heart for awhile.
"Well, do something else, it isn't working. You can't let him die. He's my son for god's sake. Get a better doctor, do something." Jordan cried to the doctor. The doctor looked on sadly as he explained to Jordan that the defibrillator was the last step. He didn't know if Evan would come through. "I'm sorry" He said softly and patted Jordan on the shoulder. In Jordan's eyes, sorry was not enough. He just stared at the doctor as if looking right through him. Any strength that Jordan had drained from him as he leaned on Rodelyn for support. He felt like the world was crashing down on him.
The doctor whispered to Rodelyn that she should escort Jordan back to the floor waiting room and wait there for any news. She nodded still in shock and slowly the walked back towards the area.
Images of all the time spent with Evan flashed through Jordan's mind. He sat silently praying that everything would be fine. Evan couldn't be taken from him just when he'd found out about his paternity. Instantly he blamed himself. He should never have left. He should have taken Evan away from Linda's influence the last time he found her intoxicated. He should have had a paternity test taken when he'd found out she was pregnant. 'Should haves' filled his thoughts.
