Rodelyn sat in her office pouring over Evans information. He'd been through some shit in his life. Two foster homes, in a shelter numerous times. Had seen his mother get busted for drug use, minimal physical abuse, he even had drugs stashed on him. He was a year behind, only in Kindergarten when he should have been in first grade and even there he wasn't doing as well as the average child. She put the folder down. Wow, he'd seen more in his small life than she'd seen in hers. What was she going to get out of this kid? She imagined a little tough hood kid ice on the outside and just as cold on the inside. This was going to be an afternoon.
"Well what do you think?" Jackie poked her head back in.
"He's only 6? Could have fooled me. The thing I'm wondering is why is he still with this woman?"
"She's rehabbed. Now she just as to prove herself to the judge and she has full custody of him once again."
Sometimes Rodelyn didn't understand this justice system and she often brooded to her friend Katrina who worked in the law field. "I'm only a lowly assistant, I can't change the Constitution" was what she often said in exasperation over Rodelyns questions. Didn't Judges have common sense? They were willing to put a child back into an unstable environment because it 'looked good.' She shook her head in disbelief.
"I know what you're thinking but it's not our position to try and change what's inevitably going to happen. We try to make it the easiest transition for the kids as we can.
Jordan drove his Mercedes down the streets looking for the address. Evan continued to fiddle with the radio. "Eminem, he's cool." He said singing along. "My name is...my name is, my name is Evan Smith" The little boy bounced up and down in his seat while Jordan tried to strain to see the addresses. He finally saw 1675 and the brick building. "Here we are." Jordan rolled to a stop behind the building opened his door. Evan opened his door and sprinted out right in front of an on-coming car. "Evan!" Jordan cried, but Evan had run straight past. The car passed and there stood Evan on the other side. "Man, don't you EVER!" Jordan was angry with him. "That is so dangerous, hasn't your mother told you anything about crossing in front of cars?"
"Nope." Evan continued on walking. Jordan sighed, sometimes he wondered if he was helping out doing the right thing. Sometimes he admitted to himself that Evan would be better off with parents that could look after his well being and bring him up in a normal life. Maybe teach him a few useful things about life. That's why he hung around. He wanted Evan to grow up in as much a good environment as Jordan could make for him. He was more of a big brother, father figure type.
They walked into the office and it immediately appealed to Evan. He ran right over to the hot wheels and toys on the floor. Jordan went to the reception desk. "There is a 3:00 appointment for Evan Smith." The receptionist smiled at him "Okay, I'll let the Dr know you are here Mr. Smith and Dr. Rowlands will want to speak to you."
"Oh wait, I'm not his father. His mother had to go on a job interview and asked me to bring him. I thought she called to let you know."
"Oh, well." She said looking around for a message "I don't see a message or anything. Let me check around. Why don't you go have a seat Mr...?"
"Knight. Jordan Knight."
"Okay." She said, the name not registering.
Jordan sat in the seat surrounding the toys, a few parents and children were also in there.
"Aren't you Jordan Knight? The singer?" A woman scooted over to him.
"Yes, that's me." He said. He was tempted to lie, but why?
"Oh wow, I was such a fan of yours years back. I heard you're singing again. I'm Tammy."
Jordan talked to the lady a while and ended up signing an autograph for both her and her daughter.
"Evan? Evan Smith." A nice looking lady stood at a doorway and Evan looked at Jordan "Go on bro, I'll be here."
Evan slowly walked into the back Jackie took his hand, "Hey Evan, how are you?"
"Fine." He said hesitantly.
"You're going to be talking with a young lady named Rodelyn. She's just going to ask you questions. It'll be fun, we just ask that you be honest with her. Tell her the truth okay."
"I guess." Evan's defenses were up.
"Come on, it'll be fun and afterwards there's a treat for you."
"Sundae at Momma Marlene's house?" His eyes lit up.
"Okay, well that too, but we have our own special treat for the good boys and girls." Jackie showed him into Rodelyns office and introduced the two. Rodelyn smiled at the cute boy. He looked so normal, no indication of anything on his chart. He had big brown eyes and brown hair. He was not smiling but he did have a gleam in his eye. As Jackie left, Rodelyn sat him down and they began the initial interview.
Jordan had been sitting in the lobby for awhile when the lady that took Evan back called him in. She understood that he wasn't his father, but she talked to him a little bit. Most information she couldn't ask him, with doctor, client confidentiality but she did get information on his surroundings and his personality. They talked for a bit and she gave Jordan a bunch of brochures to give to Linda. "We're here to help him, that's our bottom line. Only his mother can do the rest."
Evan walked into the room they were in "My treat, where's my treat." Evan was now excited and hyper.
"Ah, yes your treat, can't forget that" Jackie said pulling out her drawer to reveal an assortment of candy. Evan picked a couple and thanked her. "Now it's sundae time."
Jordan and Jackie both laughed as they left the room. Rodelyn stood outside. "Bye Rodelyn!" Evan yelled.
Rodelyn smiled at him and then looked up to his father. The sight she saw almost made her mouth fly open. Jordan Knight, or an incredible look-a-like was standing there holding his hand. Jordan smiled at her. She was very beautiful and young. Her dark hair flowed over her shoulders as she wore a pale blue cashmere sweater with her dark blue pants. She looked at him imploringly and then turned to Jackie
"Oh, hon you're done, get out of here and go rest. You were great." She turned to Jordan. "This is our newest assistant, Rodelyn. Rodelyn, Jordan Knight." They shook hands. "Nice to meet you. Your son is one special kid." Rodelyn smiled, he had a son and she never knew it.
"Oh he's not my son, he's a special friend of mine."
Now she sounded like the idiot. How she'd always wanted to meet him and now finally she had, at her place of employment. She was thankful of that because at least she had to appear professional. Jackie looked at them both staring at each other. "Well this could get interesting." She thought.
"Okay well I guess I'll get out of here now. I'll see you tomorrow Jackie."
Jackie nodded.
"See you." She said to Jordan, her face flushed. She walked out into the night. OMG she couldn't believe that Jordan Knight just stepped into her office. She'd be in love with him since 1987 when he was with NKOTB and although she hadn't seen him in awhile, she got that old familiar feeling as soon as she laid eyes on him. She smiled as she stood outside. Wow.
Jordan stared at the door as she walked out.
"She's sweet isn't she?" Jackie said.
"She's nice." Jordan said trying to hide his interest.
"She's not married, and she's new here." Jackie leaned in and whispered to him and then walked away.
Jordan stared after the woman and smiled. "Come on Evan, let's get to mom's"
Jackie watched as he left. She didn't know anything about Rodelyns background or if she was even involved but the look on her face when she saw Jordan put thoughts into Jackie's mind.
Jordan and Evan walked out to the car as Rodelyn walked through the parking lot. Looks like she was walking down the street. It was obvious she didn't have a car since there was no street parking.
"You need a ride somewhere?" Rodelyn turned around startled and found Jordan looking at her.
"Um, no that's okay I'm just going to take the bus, I gotta get used to it you know."
"It's no big deal, it'll be there tomorrow, besides, you don't want me feeling like a complete heel if I drive off and leave you to walk through the night. Come on, we won't bite. Well I won't, not sure about my riding partner over here." Evan looked up "I don't bite, I don't. But can we still get the sundae."
Rodelyn smiled at both boys and thought about it. Well it was Jordan, and she would never have an opportunity like this again to hang out with him. "Okay I guess I will." She walked and he opened his passenger door and let her in.
The ride to her apartment was enjoyable. She admitted that she knew who he was and that she was glad to meet him. He asked how long she'd been here and she told him for about a month. They talked a little and Evan even joined in. Finally Jordan reached her apartment. "Evan stay in the car for a second." Jordan got out and opened Rods door, he walked her to the front of the building so he could keep an eye on Evan "Cool kid huh?"
"Oh very, I can't believe everything he's been through" she quieted herself after that, that was privilege information, but if he brought him here, didn't he know?
"Yeah he is, hey don't hold anything against him. He's a great kid, just had a real screwed up life, his mom, she's getting help and she's turned around so I see good things in his future. "
"I hope so, I mean, I can tell there's a lot inside he doesn't want to say, and it's going to be hell pulling it out of him, but you know what, I think he's going to be okay, as long as he doesn't drop back into that life."
"Yeah I know what you mean. Well I gotta go get him to my moms before he drives off himself. And I wouldn't put it past him. It was nice meeting you Rodelyn."
"Yeah it was nice finally meeting you too, maybe you can give me and autograph someday." She joked.
"Hey who knows." He smiled and she smiled at him and slowly went into her building. Jordan just stared after her, his heart already beating irregularly.
