Saturday Rodelyn woke up early. She didn't know why until she remembered her conversation with Jordan the night before. She decided to get some computer time in and logged onto AOL. The familiar LAgirlInEngland stood out in her buddy list.
"Kat?" She typed.
"No way, it's that chick formerly known as Rodelyn from Jersey!" Rodelyn laughed.
"Yes it's me and you're up early."
"Well Dan's snoring and I had to do something. It was either smother him or this. He'd better thank his good lord for AOL"
"Ah yes, it keeps you sane :)- Well I'm up and have to get ready for my trip to New York."
"No fair you have this great job, in that great city and now you're taking a great trip. Now you see me jealous."
"Wanna really get jealous, guess who I'm going with?" Rodelyn's smile played on her face.
"Who Jonathan?"
"No Jordan"
"Wha" That went on for about 3 lines.
"I've got to call and talk to you because I can't write everything down on this screen."
"You've met Jordan! Shit girl, you going out with him and didn't even tell me? *hurt*"
"No I'm not going out with him, remember what I told you before I moved him. Men on the back burner? ALL men. We've ran into each other a few times, that's all, it has to do mainly with my job."
"mmm, child psychologist, Jordan? Makes for a good combination. LOL Well you'd better call me soon, and you ask Jordan about Jon, but keep it on the DL I don't want Dan knowing my sordid NK secret fantasies and such. And speaking of, he's up I gotta go and make like good wifey." Katrina signed off.
Rodelyn was just about busting up at her friend. Katrina was hilarious. She remembered the times they had planned on moving to Boston and rooming. She's sure they would have had the greatest time. No sooner than she signed off than her phone rang.
"Make like good wifey my foot Kat, you just want to hear the sordid details?"
"Details? About what" Jordan's voice echoed on the other end.
"Oh, um Jordan, oops, thought you were my friend."
"Talking about me behind my back eh? Tsk Tsk Tsk" Jordan smiled on the other end.
"Not even, don't be too sure of yourself" but Rodelyn was blushing furiously on the other end.
"Just called to see what time you'd be ready. I've been up for a couple of hours now, got an excited boy in my house." Jordan looked as Evan sat in front of the TV playing Super Mario Kart.
"Well I just have to take a shower and get ready."
"So say about this afternoon then."
"Jordan! I don't take that long."
"Well most women."
"I'm not most women. Say about 1 1/2 to 2 hours if that much. Why don't you come over at about 8:00."
"That's cool, enough time to stop for donuts."
"Fine I'll see you then."
Rodelyn quickly showered and did all the primping. In one hour she was standing in her room wearing her favorite pair of jeans and a sweater with a matching cardigan over it. She did the minimal make-up thing since she hardly needed any and decided to clean up a bit since Jordan would be seeing the inside of her house this time. Time went fast and all of a sudden her doorbell rung.
She got to the door and found Jordan, Evan and a big box of donuts. Well come on in" she took the donuts. "Oh and you two too"
"You know you've got a sense of humor. What kind, I can't say." They ate a couple of donuts and then hit the road. She noticed Jordan was semi quiet.
"Something on your mind."
"No nothing, just enjoying the view, and quiet" He pointed to Evan who was fast asleep in the back.
What he was really thinking was the state that Linda was in when he left her. Should he had left, what if she was unconscious? He'd certainly seen her like that before but what if that time...?" He shook the thought out of his head and tried hard to concentrate. Having Rodelyn sitting next to him helped a little. He smiled at her. Maybe it was time he just came out and asked her out on an official date. He'd wanted to for some time now. She looked out the window as they drove on for miles.
All too soon Evan was awake and right when he saw the New York City skyline he got really hyper. They stopped for a real breakfast right outside the city and then drove in. He drove around Central Park and parked. They walked around for a bit, and Jordan even brought them a ride on a horse drawn buggy. He wanted to take Rodelyn here one night, maybe if they got together. It would be so romantic.
Rodelyn admitted to herself that she was having a great time already, and Jordan being there did help. She was starting to see him in a new light and she could not do that. She would not be caught up in the romance of it all, and Jordan definitely spelled romance. She shook the thought out of her mind as they walked downtown later on. They'd went to a off Broadway play. He'd told her that if they were going to spend the night he would have splurged for "Les Miserables" or a play of that liking. They had dinner at Sylvia's Soul Food restaurant and then headed back. Jordan was in better spirits on the way back until he hit the Boston City limits. He was going to turn off the freeway at Evan's exit and take him home first but he didn't want Rodelyn to get any ideas on what his life was about, especially if Linda was home, or wasn't.
He quietly drove her home and walked her to her door. Evan was asleep in the back seat and Jordan felt comfortable leaving him there with the alarm on.
"Thanks for coming with us Rodelyn, you were great, with us, with him."
"Thanks for inviting me. I guess I do need to get out sometime." This scene was all too familiar to her. She wanted to get inside. She hated what happened next, they kiss, they go out and somewhere down the line she's left broken, alone to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Not this time, definitely not this time.
Jordan looked down at her with expectancy and Rodelyn turned around and opened her door. "You'd better get to Evan, leaving him down there is not a good idea Jordan."
"I know Rod, but hey, you want to go out to dinner tomorrow night?"
"Thanks but no thanks, I've been out once, I've got a lot to do tomorrow."
"What about Monday? I can pick you up from work and we can go eat, maybe catch a movie."
Rodelyn closed her eyes and took a breath, she'd better do it now before he made a fool of himself. "I'm sorry Jordan, I'm not interested in dating. It's all too complicated for me. I'd like to keep it where it is and be happy with that."
"Not even dinner. I'm not asking for a commitment Rodelyn, I'd just like to get to know you better." Jordan ran his hand through his hair.
"Can't you do that as a friend? I'm not trying to hurt your or anything and believe me in different times I'd be all over you now, but, please Jordan, just leave it as it is."
"I can do that." Jordan said sadly. He looked in her eyes and saw pain and hurt that he hadn't seen before.
"Thanks Jordan."
Rodelyn walked inside closed the door and leaned against it. That was what she wanted, why did she feel like she'd done the worse thing imaginable?
