Glory to God in the highest, and on earth  peace, good will toward them.    Luke 2, 14.

The subject of a series of history lessons was: war an peace. The teacher was well able to fill his pupils with enthusiasm for the cause of peace. They discussed ways of avoiding warfare. One suggestion was the abolition of arms of all kinds. A slogan was even thought out: “No bombs, no guns will give peace many sons”. Then one pupil ventured to state, very hesitantly, that Cain had killed his brother before arms were manufactured. The teacher had no explanation for this true fact, and the conclusion remained: we must get rid of all weapons.

What was the Bible to say on this subject? If shows that the real cause of all warfare lies in man’s heart. Adam’s and Eve’s sin turned the human heart into a source of much evil, whether in thought or deed. If we  are sincere, we can all discover envy, hatred, enmity and much besides within us. It became clear that deep-rooted jealously and enmity in the first human offspring, Cain and Abel, was the real cause of the first murder. The same vices start wars.

On the birth of  the Saviour the angels announced, “Peace on earth”, in the fields of Bethlehem. But the rejection of the Prince of peace, Jesus Christ, made peace on earth impossible. A state of peace on this earth  will not reign until Christ appears on  this earth for the second time to establish His reign of peace after the judgment of all evil.

Peace, perfect peace,
In this dark world of sin?
The blood of Jesus
Whispers peace within.
