Sunday  6  January

Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin. He that hateth  me, hateth my Father also.  John 15, 20 - 23.

Thoughts on John’s Gospel (152)

So long as the Lord shone forth as the true light in the darkness, His portion was the hatred of the world. He exposed people’s evil deeds. For this reason they persecuted Him and wanted to kill Him.

The Lord’s followers will also  have to  bear with persecution, for the sufferings that His disciples endure come upon them for His Name’s sake. The world hates that name. That is the proof that the world does not know the Father who sent Jesus to us.

But it was according to the Father’s will that He came. His incarnation and the words He spoke impose responsibility upon mankind. If the Lord Jesus had not come, they would have had no sin; their wickedness would not have been evident. But now they had taken up a standpoint in face of the truth and the light. They loved darkness and untruth and persisted therein. Their hatred of Jesus made them reject Him, and at the same time they  revealed their hatred towards the Father who had sent Him.
