So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto the that look for him shall he appear the second time without ( apart from the question of) sin unto salvation. Hebrews 9, 28.
Today’s verse is the continuation of yesterday’s. Here are three further points for your consideration:
1. Christ was offered once. His sacrifice is unique, like death among human beings in the previous verse. Nor need it be repeated because it fully met the righteous demands of our holy God once for all time. The fact that God raised Him from the dead is the confirmation of God’s satisfaction (cf. Romans 4, 25).
2. Christ was offered to bear the sins of many. Who are the “many”? All are not included in this group, which consists of those who, during their lives, confessed their sins and believed that He suffered and die in their stead. They are the children of God. The judgment that they deserved as much as many others was passed and carried out on Jesus Christ. That is why they can now await Him with joy in their hearts.
3. Christ is coming again. He will appear for those who are His own. And then His coming will have nothing to do with the issue of sin. Christ bore the sins of those who belong to Him when He first came into the world to glorify and satisfy God on that account. That renders this matter superfluous when He returns for His own.
This distinction between the people referred to in v. 27 and the believers in v.28 is of great consequence. The former can expect judgment. The latter await Christ, their Saviour. Dear reader, do you belong to the latter group?
