It is appointed  unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.   Hebrews 9, 27.

To state that everyone must die is a truism. But it is only in the Bible that we find the reason why everyone must die. Romans chapter 5 establishes that the sin of the first human beings introduced death into the world. Had there been a single person after Adam  on earth who never sinned, he need not have died. But the Bible declares that all have sinned; therefore no-one can escape death.

The second part of today’s verse is even more serious: “after this the judgment”. God’s judgment ensures upon death. To deny this is to no purpose. People may have their bodies cremated or take refuge in Buddhism, hoping for the transmigration of souls. There  is, however, no escaping God’s pronouncement: His word is truth. Everybody must die once, not repeatedly, and the judgment will follow. There God’s horror of sin will be shown in His verdict, which will be according to His holiness and incorruptible righteousness.

If we cannot avoid dying, have we at least a possibility of escaping the judgment? Let us thank God that we have! There is the Saviour,  Jesus Christ.

Everyone who confesses his sins to God, believing that the Lord Jesus underwent God’s judgment. “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3, 18).
