Philip findeth Nathaniel, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathaniel said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. John 1, 45, 46.
Philip was convinced that Jesus was the Messiah, Israel’s Redeemer. He felt the urge to tell Nathaniel his news. But the latter was skeptical. Jesus of Nazareth? Nazareth was in Galilee, in the north of the land, a region without a good reputation. But it was Nathaniel’s home district; so if he spoke derisively of Nazareth, he must have had a reason for doing so.
Was this Jesus of Nazareth truly the Saviour, the way to God? How did Philip treat Nathaniel’s objections and try to convince him? He simply invited him to “Come and see!” That was the best way to be certain. When Nathaniel went, he discovered that the Lord had already seen him and knew all about him. Convinced, he acknowledged Him to be the Son of God, the King of Israel.
“Come and see!” This invitation goes out to you. Read the gospels if you need convincing. There you will come face to face with the Lord Jesus. If you contemplate how He dealt with the people He met, you, too, will find out that He knows all about us. He is aware of our longing for joy and happiness. He knows of the secret troubles in our hearts. And in His perfect love and kindness He helps us overcome them.
But we also notice that He knows about our sinfulness, our self-will and our lost state. Yet He does not cast us off. He calls us to come and lay the burden of our life, all our guilt, on Him and obtain forgiveness. “Come and see!”.
